It’s the summer of the tariff. President Donald Trump ignited more conversation around impending duties on Chinese imports when he delayed the 10% tariff on some products until December. But the headlines didn’t tell the full story: Most shoes are still in the batch of goods that will be hit starting Sept. 1
Meanwhile, it was a dramatic week for retail earnings. Macy’s shocked Wall Street with its disappointing report, sending most retail stocks down on Wednesday. A day later, Walmart and Alibaba fueled some recovery after both companies turned in solid numbers.
Both the tariffs and the tough retail climate were hot topics at FN Platform in Las Vegas. A special panel discussion featuring Pensole’s D’Wayne Edwards and Aldo’s Valerie Martin also examined another burning issue — how companies can enact real change when it comes to diversity and inclusion.
Plus, Steve Madden snapped up two more brands and Tapestry’s Kate Spade continued to face challenges.
Read on for five big stories that defined footwear this week.
For more than a year, President Donald Trump has suggested that China was footing the bill for the tariffs slapped on United States imports. On Tuesday, the U.S. Trade Representative announced that it would postpone the 10% duty on some of the $300 billion worth of Chinese products. The fourth tranche of tariffs has thus been split, with one set impacted with the additional duty on Sept. 1 and another on Dec. 15. “We’re doing this for the Christmas season,” Trump told reporters. “Just in case some of the tariffs would have an impact on U.S. customers.” But according to the American Apparel and Footwear Association, more than three quarters (or 77%) of all shoes, clothes and home textile imports to the U.S. from China — amounting to about $39 billion worth of goods — will be taxed when the first wave of tariffs hits in less than three weeks.
Steven Madden Ltd. is on an acquisition streak. A day after completing the purchase of sneaker startup Greats Brands Inc., the New York-based footwear firm announced it snapped up women’s apparel label BB Dakota. Madden has been making big deals in the past few years, adding Dolce Vita, Blondo and Schwartz & Benjamin to its growing portfolio. And its sales numbers continue to impress, even amid a challenging retail climate: For Q2, the Long Island City, N.Y.-based firm reported revenues of $445 million — a 12% gain over the year-ago period.
Blame it on Macy’s. After the department store reported a disappointing Q2 that missed — by a wide margin — analyst expectations, investors punished other retail stocks over concerns that Macy’s disappointing figures were a sign of larger problems in the retail sector. A day later, however, Walmart and Alibaba posted solid results, providing a glimmer of hope to the market and Wall Street.
Tapestry Inc. shares took a hit as progress at Kate Spade — a brand in the middle of an overhaul — stalled during Q4. But company CEO Victor Luis said the company is working to fix it fast. How so? It will focus on reinvigorating product (starting with handbags), launch more whimsical novelty items and unveil a healthy amount of collaborations. The company also is banking on China to fuel growth across all of its brands.
More companies are prioritizing diversity and equality, but change is coming slow. In a conversation at FN Platform, D’Wayne Edwards of Pensole Footwear Design Academy explained that pay equity can be a “two-way” street. “You should also make an effort to increase your value through knowledge you’ve acquired every single year you’re on that job. You want to make yourself undeniable,” he said.
Sophie Turner certainly knows how to pull off one of the year’s hottest trends. The Game of Thrones actress, known for her edgy, risk-taking fashion, has once again mastered the art of wearing biker shorts while out and about in New York City with her husband Joe Jonas.
Turner was spotted holdings hands with her hubby in a pair of skin-tight white biker shorts, a pinstripe menswear-inspired button-down shirt, and casual white sneakers and ankle socks. The low-top leather shoes are the perfect summer accessory for hitting the town thanks to its versatile appeal and maximum comfort. The biker shorts trend, made popular by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Rihanna, appears to show no signs of slowing down.
This is not the first time Turner has rocked the popular street-style trend. The actress was just recently seen in another pair of biker shorts while out on a shopping trip with her friend Priyanka Chopra in Miami. On that occasion, she opted for an army green version while pairing it with another button-down shirt and sneakers.
Jada Pinkett Smith brought her mix-and-match, high-low style to the premiere of her new film “Angel Has Fallen.” The actress attended the Los Angeles photocall in a luxurious tweed coat from Chanel’s Metiers d’Art collection. She paired the high-end outerwear with a gold embroidered top, dark wash blue jeans, and gold sandals. The T-strap shoes are detailed with small studs and spikes on top of clear PVC.
Pinkett Smith’s coat is from Karl Lagerfeld’s final runway show for Chanel before the designer’s death earlier this year. The pre-fall collection (which debuted last fall) was shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in an Egyptian themed setting.
Pinkett Smith loves to play with sparkly, glittery looks, especially when it comes to footwear. She recently sported a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti black patent leather slingbacks with a shiny bejeweled back at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Her shiny silver tuxedo was the perfect match to go along with her dazzling shoes.
Rachel Brosnahan was spotted in New York City yesterday in full costume filming for the new season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” the hit comedy on Amazon Video that won her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress. “Mrs. Maisel” costume designer Donna Zakowska styled Brosnahan in a 1950s bright green dress, matching fascinator hat, and teal coat. She paired the look with light blue pumps with a sensible heel.
The Emmy-award-winning actress was seen on set carrying boxes and walking the streets of New York. The show is set in the late 1950s, where Brosnahan’s character “Midge” lives a comfortable life in the Upper West Side, often sporting fit-and-flare dresses, elongated coats, and bright colors.
“The transformation process isn’t complete without putting on these gorgeous costumes,” Brosnahan previously told FN. “Having my hair done, putting on that red lip — without any single one of those elements, I don’t feel like Midge when I look in the mirror.” The vintage heels Brosnahan has to wear are reportedly so small that she has to go up a size and a half in all the shoes, which proved to be a challenge in the beginning.

Alessandra Ambrosio stepped out in Los Angeles yesterday after leaving her go-to yoga spot. The former Victoria’s Secret Angel was seen wearing a gray sports bra and short leggings while holding her yoga mat and a change of clothes. Her hair was up in a bun and she had on black aviators, layered necklaces and a watch. Instead of sporting sneakers, she had on a simple pair of Havaianas sandal flip flops, presumably to take them off easier for her yoga class.
The Brazilian supermodel and mother of two is an avid yoga practitioner and has been spotted leaving yoga classes before. On one occasion, she was seen exiting the venue wearing purple leggings emblazoned with palm trees, a T-shirt, and another pair of flip flops. Outside of working out, Ambrosio keeps her look flexible and appropriate for the occasion, whether it’s a black-tie gala or a work function. For her more relaxed days, she’s been known to slip into high-tech sneakers or slip-ons for her day-to-day affairs.

Ambrosio is perhaps known more for her stunning red carpet looks that show off her statuesque figure. She tends to gravitate towards sexy, sky-high stilettos and strappy sandals that elongate her toned legs from designer brands like Giuseppe Zanotti and Christian Louboutin. She likes to pair them with short hemlines and minidresses for her more formal events. She was recently spotted at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in an ethereal white Ralph & Russo couture gown and silver gladiator sandals.
Nick Jonas is in the middle of his world tour with the Jonas Brothers, but that hasn’t stopped him from getting a round of golf in between performances. The singer was spotted out and about in New York City this morning on his way to play golf. He sported a navy polo with white piping, white shorts with golf gloves in the back pocket, a navy cap, and black aviators. His black leather fanny pack was slung across his torso, and he also wore a pair of simple, white slip-on shoes. Jonas was also seen holding his golf bag with equipment and gear inside.
Jonas is an avid golfer (as is his brother, Joe) and took some time this morning to get a few rounds in before his concert with the Jonas Brothers tonight in Boston. The group is in the middle of the North American leg of their “Happiness Begins” tour, which kicked off this month in Miami. Nick and Joe were also spotted playing golf together there before their performance.
Jonas’s white slip-on shoes are a signature look for him as he’s usually seen in white styles from several different footwear brands, including Common Projects and Adidas. The singer does like to mix it up for date night, however, as evident from a recent outing with his wife Priyanka Chopra in London. Jonas sported a pair of classic grey New Balance 990v5 sneakers on that occasion.
