Nike decided to take somewhat of a different approach in this year for how they celebrated #AirMaxDay. The past few years we have seen the Swoosh release some highly anticipated Air Max sneakers on March 26th (Air Max Day) or all throughout the month of March, which most of us now recognize as Air Max Month. And while they did release some very worthy Air Max sneakers this month, the real treats will come next month where we’ll see the arrival of the On Air Collection as well as a handful of eye-catching collaborations. This year however, Nike decided to turn imagination into reality by hosting DEPARTMENT OF UNIMAGINABLE in key cities including, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City to celebrate all things Air. Your next question is probably, what is the Department Of Unimaginable? Can I check it out? Well let’s break it down, and if you live in one of those four cities, yes you can definitely experience it for yourself.
Kicks On Fire had the opportunity to attend the Department Of Unimaginable in the heart of Los Angeles during their special Media Preview Night on March 26th. Think of the space as a lab which gives you a brief rundown of the history of Air Max. On display was a timeline of some of the most meaningful and impactful Air Max sneakers of all-time starting off with of course the Air Max 1 and ending with the new kid on the block, the Air Max 720.
In addition to a history timeline of Air Max, there was also a large display on site which housed some of the most sought after Air Max sneakers of the past 30+ years. Perhaps the coolest thing about this display was that all of these shoes belonged to sneakerheads from the Los Angeles community who embody the spirit of what it means to live and breathe Air Max. The true meaning of “For Us, By Us.”
The fun didn’t end there as Nike encouraged everyone in attendance to flex their imagination muscle by sketching out your own Air Max design. The ON AIR workshops led by Nike designers and collaborators consists of design-focused curriculum covering Industrial Design, Color Design & Materials Exploration and Illustration & Typography. The experiences are highly visual with a mix of lecture style learning and hands on doing, focused on design principles and creative thinking.
If you would like to attend Nike’s DEPARTMENT OF UNIMAGINABLE, you still have time as this activation will be going on all the way through Sunday, March 31st. A rundown of the scheduling is listed below.

There’s no turning back. Athleisurewear has taken over our closets, especially when it comes to footwear. But don’t its casual connotations have you thinking you can’t wear these styles to the office? While the category has roots in the performance athletic market, there are lots of styles today that are dressy and sophisticated enough to wear to work. And although they may not make the fashion cut for lawyers arguing a case in court, there are plenty of versions dressy enough to footnote a summertime dress or skirt.
First, think beyond the more expected lace-up styles that take their inspiration from sneakers. There’s a new wave that includes ballet flats, Mary Jane styles and wedges that deliver on a more refined approach to comfort.
Now, don’t think these more refined athleisure looks are too dressy for weekend wear. Since they maintain the same comfort elements as their more casual counterparts, including footbed cushioning, lightweight flexible outsoles, and uppers in neoprene and airy mesh, they can be worn to Sunday brunch or an overnight getaway.
Have a favorite shoe brand? It’s more than likely there’s an offering of athleisure styles as the category continues to pick up momentum. Consider labels such as Cole Haan with its ZeroGrand technology that delivers on lightweight cushioning and flexibility, and Bzees, which has evolved athlesiure dressing into a full-blown wardrobe that includes fashion boots, slides and clogs.
Athleisure footwear also makes good fashion sense when traveling due to the lightweight properties of these designs. As airline regulations continue to escalate when it comes to luggage limitations, it’s easy to pack several pairs of athleisure styles for the same weight as a pair of more traditional shoes or sneakers.
Here, FN has curated a wardrobe of athleisure styles suitable for officewear.
Easy Spirit Twist 8
This slip-on style done in a woven fabric naturally allows air to circulate, while a perforated footbed enhances breathability.
It happened again: Another college basketball player has suffered an on-court sneaker malfunction.
This time, Gonzaga’s Killian Tillie fell victim, with his Nike Kyrie 4 sneaker splitting during Thursday’s Sweet 16 matchup against Florida State.
In an interview with The Spokesman-Review, the 6’10” star revealed that a piece of his shoe came loose with the game down to its final minutes. Luckily, a media timeout came with just over two minutes remaining, giving Tillie time to slip on a fresh pair of kicks.
“The sole was sticking out, so I had to change shoes,” Tillie said. “[The manager] had to run super-fast.”
The junior forward said he had experienced the same problem before but plans to continue wearing the shoes. The portion of the sneaker that broke was reglued.
Blown-out sneakers have been a big storyline in NCAA hoops this year.
Zion Williamson, the Duke freshman projected to go No. 1 overall in the draft, suffered from a split shoe in a high-profile February game against rival North Carolina. The incident led to an immediate dip in Nike shares and left the 18-year-old temporarily sidelined with a knee injury. After Williamson’s Nike PG 2.5 PE malfunctioned, he switched to the Kyrie 4 — the same shoe that broke for Tillie last night.
On Feb. 26, an Adidas sneaker blew out on the court. The shoe in question was the Adidas Harden Vol. 3, worn by Indiana forward Justin Smith.
In Gonzaga’s case, the shoe malfunction had no impact on the outcome of the game. The Bulldogs defeated FSU, securing a spot in the Elite Eight. They will take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 4 p.m. ET today.
Jennifer Lopez stepped right into character with a throwback look on the set of “Hustlers.”
While the 49-year-old has her pulse on all the latest trends, she suited up in a early-2010s ensemble for her day of filming in New York yesterday.
The “Shades of Blue” star sported a black velour Juicy Couture sweatshirt — which she wore with the hood pulled up — and shiny black leggings.
On her feet, the “On the Floor” singer rocked Giuseppe Zanotti wedge sneakers from spring ’13. Made of croc-embossed leather, the shoes feature gold hardware and a dual zipper closure. They have a 3-inch heel with a 1-inch platform for an additional boost.
Although wedge sneakers have fallen out of style, they were a big trend for several years, with stars like Hilary Duff, Sarah Jessica Parker and J-Lo herself embracing them.
In fact, the “Maid in Manhattan” actress tried her own hand at designing a pair of wedge sneakers. Lopez and Zanotti collaborated on two capsule collections, which released for spring ’17 and fall ’17. The latter featured an embellished wedge sneaker, dubbed the Tiana.
“I grew up with holes in my shoes, so this collaboration is very special to me — to be able to create such beautiful shoes with an artist like Giuseppe,” J-Lo told FN in a February 2017 interview.
Olivia Culpo stepped out in a casual but pulled-together look as she headed to lunch with pals in Miami yesterday.
The model wore a full-on Fendi look, save for the shoes. Her top was a $1,100 cropped cotton sweater with cutouts at the shoulders and a drawstring closure at the waist. On the bottom, Culpo went with deep-pocketed cargo pants that feature a logo’d elasticized waistband with a metallic clip at the center; the pants cost $1,790.
For footwear, the former Miss Universe turned to one of her go-to brands: Stuart Weitzman. She sported the label’s $500 Curvia pump in nude. Designed to elongate the legs, the shoe has a pointed silhouette with a low cut at the sides.
The “I Feel Pretty” actress pulled together her look with a Fendi Peekaboo pocket bag and silver hoop earrings. She wore her hair pulled back in a sleek updo.
The 26-year-old took to Instagram to share a close-up look at her outfit, captioning the image: “TODAY! Hi Miami .”
With 3.8 million followers on Instagram alone, Culpo is a bona-fide influencer. She launched a collection of moderately priced clothing and accessories with Express in January. In the past, the Rhode Islander has worked with Marled by Reunited on capsules for Revolve.
The 21-year-old took to Instagram yesterday to show off a sensual Jacquemus look that seemed tailor-made for the beach. She sported a see-through dress with cut-out detailing at the midriff and a bandeaulike top; it retails for $500.
On her feet, the “Life of Kylie” star rocked white strappy sandals from the French label’s spring ’19 collection. Priced at $570, the shoes feature a 4-inch woven cylindrical heel and white leather straps. The espadrille-style sandals tie at midcalf.
The Adidas ambassador accessorized with a straw and leather bag from the spring ’19 Jacquemus collection, which costs $400.
Around her neck, the billionaire gave a nod to 1-year-old daughter Stormi, wearing a custom necklace with the word “Storm” written on it. The cosmetics mogul modeled a new lip color from her latest lip kit, dubbed Extraordinary.
While Jenner first gained fame from her family’s reality TV show, she earned the bulk of her billion-dollar fortune from her makeup empire. In the athleticwear space, Jenner has a deal with Adidas— sister Kendall and brother-in-law Kanye West work with the label as well — and helped promote the brand’s ’90s-inspired Falcon sneaker. An additional source of income for the mega-influencer? Social media, where she can make hundreds of thousands of dollars per sponsored post.
The 23-year-old wowed in a teensy minidress and boots as she appeared to promote “Dark Phoenix” at WonderCon at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif., yesterday.
Turner sported a electric blue minidress with long sleeves and exposed zipper detailing going down the front. The dress featured a high neckline and contrasting black stitching on the arms and bodice.
For footwear, the “Game of Thrones” star went with lace-up boots featuring a ridged outsole and a block heel. The edgy boots got a feminine edge with a floral pattern — done in blue and white to match Turner’s dress.
As for her beauty look, the actress chose sparkly purple eye shadow and a glossy pink lip. She wore her blond hair in loose waves.
Apart from acting, Turner has a strong hold on the fashion industry. In addition to frequently making headlines for her unique street style, the star is a muse to Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere and appears in campaigns for the French label.
The English beauty was joined on the red carpet by Alexandra Shipp, who also appears in “Dark Phoenix.” Shipp looked stylish in an asymmetrical white dress with a low neckline and belted waist. Her shoes were pointy-toed leopard-print pumps, which had a stiletto heel and a low cut at the sides, exposing more of the foot.
Tonight’s the night. Many of the biggest names in entertainment are coming together for the 50th annual NAACP Image Awards.
The awards show honors outstanding achievement from multicultural talent in film, television, music, literature and more. The show will air live on TV One at 9 p.m. ET, with the telecast taking place from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. For those who’ve cut the cord, the NAACP will broadcast the full show on its Facebook page.
“Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson is this year’s host for the sixth consecutive time. “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett was up for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama but lost the category to “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams. Although criminal charges against Smollett have been dropped, he will not make an appearance tonight.
The biggest honor of the night is the President’s Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in public service, and this year’s will go to Jay-Z. Former recipients include Ella Fitzgerald, Muhammad Ali, Colin Powell and Spike Lee.
But the real fun begins with the red carpet, as some of the biggest names of entertainment are slated to appear in their finest attire. With presenters including Lupita Nyong’o, Kerry Washington and John Legend lined up, the fashion is sure to be spectacular.
For those hoping to tune in to just the red carpet, there’s an easy way: Facebook Live. Stylist GooGoo Atkins, actress Angel Laketa Moore and vocalist Mykal Kilgore are hosting a preshow beginning at 8:15 p.m. ET.
Denim-on-denim can be a tricky trend to pull off, but Bella Hadid has it figured out.
Clad in double denim and white high-top sneakers, the 22-year-old stepped out with mother Yolanda Hadid in New York today.
The supermodel sported an oversized jacket with a brown leather collar and a Harley Davidson patch. The jacket was layered over a white T-shirt, which Bella wore tied at the waist to reveal her toned midriff.
She teamed the denim coat with high-waisted mom jeans. On her feet, the Nike ambassador rocked white high-top sneakers with a thick rubber sole, which she wore over white socks.
The A-lister accessorized with Vogue Eyewear glasses and hoop earrings. Bella had boyfriend the Weeknd’s dog, a Doberman Pinscher named Caesar, with her on a leash. The pup wore a shiny silver collar.
Like her daughter, Yolanda selected double denim for her outfit today. The mother of three was chic in a medium-wash denim jacket and skinny jeans in the same shade. She kept the blue theme going with her accessories, choosing a baby blue scarf. For shoes, the 55-year-old went with shiny black booties on a low heel.
While Bella often wears high heels on the red carpet and runway, she prefers more casual footwear when she’s off duty, as she explained to FN for an October 2017 cover story.
I would pair [sneakers] with everything,” she said. “I’ve worn sneakers with a gown, with a short dress, a long dress, sweatpants, tracksuits, shorts. You could wear them with anything.”
Watch behind-the-scenes footage from Bella Hadid’s FN cover shoot here.
Ashleigh Barty may not be a household name, but she’s well on her way.
The 22-year-old won the Miami Open today, defeating Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
With the win, Barty earned her fourth title and is set to become the first Australian woman to reach the WTA top 10 since 2013.
In the biggest match of her career, Barty beat Pliskova on the strength of her serve. The up-and-comer finished with a season-high 15 aces and playing just 18 points on her serve. She improved to an impressive 18-3 on the year and will be ranked No. 9 as of next week.
After taking a break from tennis to professionally pursue cricket, Barty returned to the sport in 2017 — and she’s gone up in the ranks quickly.
The rising star has been signed to Fila for a number of years and renewed her deal with the Italian sportswear company in early 2018. In a release announcing the extension, Barty praised the brand’s commitment to excellence.
“Fila has a long history of supporting champions, so I am honored to represent the brand on-court,” Barty stated. “I have worked hard to improve my game and hope to build on the success of 2017. I am excited to have the support of Fila as I look forward to the coming season.”
The men’s final is slated for tomorrow and will see 20-time grand slam winner Roger Federer take on John Isner. Uniqlo-signed Federer is seeded No. 4 in the tournament, while Fila-endorsed Isner is No. 7.
Spring has finally sprung in New York, and Kaia Gerber is taking advantage.
The 17-year-old was spotted on the streets of Manhattan today enjoying the warmer weather as she sipped on an iced coffee.
The daughter of Cindy Crawford looked chic in a black minidress with a blazer layered on top. The jacket in question was the Khaite Petra blazer, which features a wide notched lapel collar and allover plaid print. It costs $1,520.
For footwear, Gerber opted for a more affordable option, choosing black Converse Chuck Taylor All Star high-top sneakers that retail for $55. Created in 1917, the classic kicks were originally made with basketball in mind but are now favored for lifestyle purposes. The shoe has a canvas upper and a vulcanized rubber sole, with a distinctive ankle patch on the side.
Gerber frequently steps out in the brand’s sneakers, pairing them with everything from dresses to jeans. The catwalker favors either black or white Converse, occasionally mixing things up with a bold red.
While the teen has no formal affiliation with Converse, she does do business in the shoe industry. Gerber is the star of Jimmy Choo’s spring ’19 ad campaign and often wears the label’s shoes. She’s walked the runway for many top labels, including Chanel, Fendi and Versace.

H&M is getting me seriously giddy about dressing for spring. I’ve already received countless compliments on this silky burnt-orange midi skirt I’ve been wearing from day to night with white knee-high boots and a simple white tee. The best part is that it looks way more expensive than it actually is—I’ve been asked several times if it’s designer—which unquestionably makes me feel pretty good since it only set me back a mere $50. (A major fashion win if there ever was one!)
The fast-fashion retailer is particularly good right now—delivering on some of spring’s must-have trends. Its recent Studio Collection drop is full of gorgeous pieces our favorite fashion muses have been quick to show off. Alexa Chung was seen sporting a suit during London Fashion Week that we’d never have guessed was from H&M. From trending zebra-print dresses to stunning sequin skirts, and jackets that could pass for designer, see how fashion girls are wearing H&M and shop our roundup of chic, expensive-looking pieces guaranteed to incite major compliments.
